By Air - Bologna airport G. Marconi is connected by national flights to all the other Italian airports and by international ones to the major towns in Europe. Daily flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bruxelles, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Lyon, Lisbona, London, Madrid, Manchester, Munich, Oporto, Paris, Stuttgart, Stockholm, Tirana and Vienna make the links with the rest of the World very easy. From the Airport there is a regular bus connection (see timetable at Aerobus ) taking you to the Railway Station. Bus stop at the airport is just outside the arrival terminal. The ticket costs 4.50 EUR and can be purchased on the bus. Taxi service is also available; be careful that taxi prices are VERY high in Italy and, in case your travel expenses are supported by INFN, they cannot be reimbursed.
By Car - The main motorway connection is
the A1 (the "Autostrada del Sole"), which links Bologna directly to Milan,
Florence and Rome and to three other main routes. The A1 can be entered,
from Turin, Genoa or Brescia, by the A21, at Piacenza; from Genoa and La
Spezia, by the A15, at Parma; from Brenner Pass, Verona, Mantova, by the
A22, at Modena.
From Trieste, Tarvisio-Villach, Venice, Padua, on the other hand, the A13 motorway is direct, as is the A14 from Ancona, Rimini and Ravenna.
All the motorways exits lead into the city by-pass (follow the signs "Tangenziale") from which the roads for all directions branch off. The by-pass exit n.7 (Centro - Via Stalingrado) is the more direct one: it leads you on a large road (Via Stalingrado) pointing to the centre. Referring to the map of town centre (see link below, we suggest to print and bring it with you), when you reach Porta Mascarella from Via Stalingrado, you should turn left (around the medieval gate) into viale Berti-Pichat until you reach Porta San Donato. Here you turn right into Via Irnerio. The Phys Dept (signed by "We are here" on the map) is after the first traffic light.
Parking - We hope to be able to host a (limited) number of cars of our guests in the internal parking of the Insitute. Outside, all parkings are payant, day and night! There is no way to reach the Hotels by car before 20 p.m.: the centre of the town has traffic limitations preventing the non residents to drive in during day hours. However, Via Irnerio is not closed to traffic, so one can find a payant parking place there, or reach the big underground parking in Piazza 8 Agosto (prices are high, unfortunately). We strongly suggest those arriving by car to keep in contact with us (phones see below) to have further instructions.
Maps - For helping you in orientation, we provide two maps: Surroundings and Centre of Bologna. On this latter, please note the "We are here" words with the arrow pointing to the location of the Phys. Dept. and the other one pointing to the S. Giovanni in Monte Guesthouse.
By Train - Bologna is the main Italian railway junction and therefore
all the most important national and international lines pass through it.
InterCity trains and EuroStar (Pendolino) high speed trains connect it
to all the major italian cities. Many night trains link Bologna with Germany,
France and Austria (in particular from Bonn, Koeln, Amsterdam, Paris and
Vienna there are direct night trains).
Hotel San Giorgio (Via delle Moline 17 -tel. (39) 051 248659
- fax (39) 051 250556) For those who come from the Airport with
the Aerobus, the best is to get down at the stop Via Indipendenza - Arena
del Sole (ask the conductor). The hotel is walking distance from
this stop (see map). If instead you are coming from the Station, take bus
no. C (you have to purchase a city bus ticket at the kiosk in the Station
Square). It goes through the small medieval streets of the centre. You
have to get down at the stop called Oberdan (ask the conductor and see
map). The hotel is walking distance from there at the corner between Via
delle Moline and Via Alessandrini. You can also walk, if your lagguage is not too heavy.
Just take Via Indipendenza and, when you reach the first traffic light, go on
straight until you meet Via Righi on your left. Take it and when you reach the crossing
with Via Alessandrini, Via Oberdan and Via delle Moline you are at S. Giorgio hotel.
Albergo Pallone (Via del Pallone 4 - tel (39) 051 4210533 - fax (39) 051 4228749) For those who come from the Airport with the Aerobus, follow the same instructions as for S. Giorgio hotel. When you reach it, continue along Via Alessandrini, cross Via Irnerio and reach Via del Pallone, whose first building on the left is the Hotel. If you come from the Station, walk along Via Indipendenza up to the first traffic light, where you turn left into Via Irnerio. Just after the large square Piazza 8 Agosto the first small street on your left (entrance under the porticates) is Via del Pallone.
Any variation in arrivals must be communicated to the hotels directly or to us (tel. see below or email to firstname.lastname@example.org ) 72 hours in advance, otherwise the first night will be charged to the guest.
