Some basic touristic infos
The main museums, Uffizi and Accademia, usually have hour long queues;
the visit to the Uffizi can be reserved in advance, you can check upon
arrival and see if you can get a place during the week; most of the
other museums are closed in the afternoon; churches are instead open in
the afternoon.
Personal suggestions (a bit off the crowd):
- San Lorenzo
church (Brunelleschi) (and possibly Medici Chapels
(Michelangelo));
- Santa Croce
church, sort of Italian Pantheon, with monumental graveyards of
Galileo and other famous names; Brunelleschi Chapel next to it;
- Cappella
Brancacci in the Carmine church (Masaccio);
- Palazzo
Davanzati (to see a palace of the renaissance);
- Bargello
museum (Cellini's small bronzes);
- Museum of History of
science (very good and very good web page,
it includes a collection of Galileo's instruments);
- walk from
Ponte Vecchio to the Forte Belvedere via Costa S. Giorgio,
visit of the Forte and view of the city from there;
- Natural
science museum of "La Specola'', next to the Dept. of Natural
Sciences, via Romana;
- The Boboli
gardens.
